Critical Thinking and Debate Class Topics

Topics
1.     For years many history books claimed “Columbus discovered America” why might some historians disagree with this statement?
2.     If the colonies accepted the Albany plan of Union would the outcome have been any different?
3.     Did King George III make the right decision with the proclamation of 1763?
4.     Was the Boston Tea Party a turning point in the relationship between the British and the colonists?
5.     The Americans were fighting for liberty and freedom however they had enslaved African Americans were they still fighting this war for those same reasons?
6.     Were the System of Checks and Balances and the Constitution a good idea for early America?
7.     Were the Americans actions to expand justified through manifest destiny?
8.     During the social reform many Americans rememberPresident Jefferson’s statement “The US cannot survive as a democracy without educated and well informed citizens” what did he mean by that and do you agree?
9.     Could the Violence in Kansas have been prevented if congress had not abandoned the Missouri compromise?
10.                        Was the Secession of the South the cause of the Civil War?
11.                        Had the US stayed neutral would the Allies have won World War I?
12.                        Did the US spend too much money carelessly during the roaring 20’s causing the US to fall into the great depression?
